AntiSlip Sheet

No-one enjoys a hospital stay.  From the less than appetizing food, the lack of privacy, to the uncomfortable beds, we just don’t want to be there any longer then needed. While hospital beds have improved over time they are still not the same as our beds at home.  The ability to raise and lower different sections of the beds does help but the increased pressure on the lower back and buttocks can cause the patient to try to move to a more comfortable position - then we must deal with the affects of gravity.

Preventing patients from sliding on hospital mattresses is an essential aspect of patient care requiring a combination of bed adjustments, non-slip bed linens, sheet holders, and other measures. Personalized solutions, such as using air mattresses, wedges, and other supportive equipment can significantly enhance patient safety and comfort.

Anti-slip sheets for hospital beds are specialized fitted or underlay sheets designed to prevent patients from sliding down or out of bed—especially important for elderly, post-surgical, or mobility-impaired patients. They're part of the pressure injury prevention and patient handling safety ecosystem in healthcare.  Improper positioning in a hospital bed can severely impact a mobility-impaired patient’s health by increasing fall risk, causing breathing difficulty, and pressure sores.  The need to readjust the position of a patient who has slipped creates pressure and strain on caregivers and can also result in injuries.

With an estimated 36 million people admitted to hospitals in the US each year (www.aha.org) for short and long term care, the basic comfort and safety of the patients and staff must be addressed.  The costs of specialty anti-slip sheets are also a factor to be considered.  The ever rising cost of a hospital or care facility stay can make the cost of specialty sheets prohibitive.

The AntiSlip Sheet is the answer.

Its ability to be sprayed on to a standard or disposable hospital sheet, in the desired location makes it both easy to use and cost effective.

PRODUCT DETAILS

The AntiSlip Sheet is a friction strip attached to the exterior surface of the fitted sheet.  It can be in the form of webbing or can be sprayed or painted onto the bed sheet.  The friction coating is an elastomeric coating applied to the webbing creating a high friction surface. Medical-grade silicones or polyurethanes would minimize skin irritation.

The coating would be applied to the area of the sheet located just below the buttock position preventing the patient from sliding down the bed when the upper portion is canted at a raised or reclined sitting position. The strip should ideally be approximately 2 inches wide across the width of the sheet. The coating can be applied across the width of the sheet or the length if needed.

Materials needed to produce the AntiSlip Sheet:

Bed Sheet

Spray can or bottle

Elastomeric compound

-medical-grade silicone polyurethane

Inventor Highlight

Mr. Ronald Getschow

The AntiSlip Sheet came about after Ron had a complete left shoulder arthroplasty performed.  He kept sliding down in the bed which necessitated two nurses struggling to pull him back up into a seated position.  This happened numerous times which started Ron thinking there has to be a better way.

While Ron was home he started to investigate the AntiSlip Sheet.  After destroying several queen sheets it was ready for trials.  The original sheets have been used by Ron for several years before applying for a patent. He uses them religiously because of the simplicity and effectiveness of the design.  The sheets have been washed in hot water more the 150 times without losing any original properties.

Pretty simple idea.
