Personal Portable Hand-Held UV Sanitizer

It is well established that ultraviolet radiation can inactivate viruses and bacteria. Portable UV sanitizers designed to disinfect surfaces at a distance from the user exist. However, none of the existing devices are safe to sanitize the user’s own hands. Accordingly, several prior devices are designed to prevent exposing the user’s skin to UV radiation.

Current portable UV hand sanitizers generally suffer from significant limitations. They fail to adequately protect the user from excessive harmful UV exposure, and thus are not suitable for safely sanitizing both the user’s hand and non-skin surfaces. As a result, sanitization typically occurs only after the user has already touched a contaminated surface—potentially transferring pathogens to other parts of the body or to other surfaces.

During the pandemic, personal liquid hand sanitizers were quickly depleted and often difficult to replace due to shortages caused by hoarding and demand exceeding production capacity. Even after the pandemic, similar shortages may occur if a new virus emerges or if COVID-19 or its variants resurge. Unlike a bottle of liquid hand sanitizer that can be used up and must be replaced by purchasing more, the Personal, Portable, Hand-Held UV Sanitizer is never depleted.

There is a critical need for a portable, convenient device that allows individuals to sanitize their hands immediately after touching potentially contaminated surfaces such as door handles or grocery items if such surfaces have not already been sterilized. There is also a need for a single device that can sanitize a suspect surface before the user touches it, reducing the likelihood of any infectious contact with viruses, bacteria, or other pathogens.

The Personal, Portable, Hand-Held UV Sanitizer safely disinfects both a user’s hand and external target surfaces using UV radiation providing protection for ourselves and our families.

Special Features

  • Safe UV-C Containment Engineered annular walls reduce forward and rearward UV leakage, protecting the user and surrounding environment.

  • Durable Tubular Housing A UV-transmissive cylindrical shell provides uniform light distribution and withstands repeated daily use.

  • Hands-On Sanitization Users sanitize their hands simply by gripping the device—no sprays, wipes, or chemicals required.

  • Complete 360° Coverage The patented geometry ensures the entire grasping surface of the hand receives consistent UV exposure.

  • Ergonomic Activation Forward-mounted switches allow easy operation while maintaining a natural grip.

PRODUCT FEATURES & BENEFITS

PRODUCT DETAILS

The Personal, Portable, Hand-Held UV Sanitizer is a compact UV-C device designed for uniform, controlled hand and surface sanitization. It incorporates:

  • A tubular UV-transmissive housing engineered to emit UV-C radiation evenly around its circumference.

  • An internal UV-C light source—either a lamp or LED array—positioned to deliver consistent 360-degree exposure.

  • A rear annular wall that blocks backward UV leakage and provides a natural resting surface for the user’s hand to prevent slippage.

  • A forward annular wall that supports activation switches, sensors, a status indicator, and an alarm speaker while minimizing forward light leakage.

  • An ergonomic grip zone sized so the user’s hand fully wraps around the housing, ensuring complete and uniform exposure during use.

Mounted at the front of the forward annular wall is an additional UV-C emitter for sanitizing external target surfaces. A built-in range finder guides the user to maintain the proper treatment distance, while an infrared sensor immediately disables the beam if it detects that the light is directed toward human skin.

The opposite end of the device would house the battery charging ports, an access hatch to a removable battery, a power switch, and sensors.

When grasped and activated, the device activates its skin sanitization mode and delivers a controlled UV-C dose to the entire surface of the user’s hand. The geometry eliminates the need for rotation or repositioning, providing consistent coverage throughout a preset exposure period. Operation is automatically restricted if excessive sanitization cycles have occurred or if insufficient time has elapsed since the previous cycle, and the system deactivates after the maximum allowable exposure time to prevent skin damage.

The software control program, with safety measures to prevent over exposure to UV radiation, would appear as follows:

Materials needed to produce Personal, Portable, Hand-Held UV Sanitizer:

  • UV-transmissive polymer tubing

  • UV-C lamp or UV–C LED array

  • Durable annular shielding components

  • Electronic control module and activation switches

  • Indicator lights and audio speakers

  • Visible light or infrared sensors

  • Range finder for secondary, targeted UV light
